A Global Provider of Financial Services completed a strategic initiative: they migrated their Retail Banking Information System from Unikix to IBM TXSeries with COBOL-IT Compiler Suite and CitSORT, achieving significant cost savings.

Overview

The Global Provider of Financial Services engaged in a Cost Reduction initiative with aggressive goals.  To achieve their goals, they migrated their solution stack from an AIX Server environment to a Linux VM environment.  They migrated their Unikix environment to IBM TXSeries, and upgraded their RDBMS from Oracle 10 to Oracle 12.  Finally, they migrated 10,500 COBOL programs from Micro Focus Server Express to COBOL-IT, and replaced Syncsort with COBOL-IT CitSORT. ATOS and IBM led the migration efforts.

The entire migration took 5 months.

About the Global Provider of Financial Services

The Global Provider of Financial Services is a leader in the business of Retail Banking & Services as well as in Corporate Institutional Banking.

With headquarters located in Paris, France, they have an annual revenue of over 46 billion euros per year and 190,000 employees around the World.

About the Retail Banking Information System Software Application

The Retail Banking Information System software application was originally developed in-house in the 1980’s.  The Global Provider of Financial Services was a long-time user of the IBM PACBASE COBOL program-generating technologies, which were compiled and run using Micro Focus COBOL compilers and runtime systems.

When the migration to COBOL-IT was initiated, the Retail Banking Information System software application contained over 10,500 COBOL programs, including 3000 batch programs.  Syncsort was being used as the external sort module.  The Retail Banking Information System software application was running on AIX machines, with a Unikix Transaction Monitor, an Oracle 10 Database, and was used by international subsidiaries in more than 100 countries.

The migration was completely transparent to the end-user, retaining 100% of original functionality and meeting or exceeding all of their cost-savings goals.  Performance benchmarks were equal or better on the Linux RedHat platform running COBOL-IT Compiler Suite and CitSORT with IBM TXSeries and Oracle 12.

The Decision to use COBOL-IT

When undertaking a major cost-cutting initiative that required examining all the elements in their Solution Stack, the Global Provider of Financial Services decided to seek alternatives to Micro Focus Server Express and Syncsort in their efforts to extend cost savings.

The COBOL-IT Compiler Suite and CitSORT technologies allowed the Global Provider of Financial Services to preserve 100% of their functionality.  Performance benchmarks run in the new Linux-based environment proved to be consistently superior to performance benchmarks run in the previous AIX environment with Micro Focus COBOL.  With the change to COBOL-IT Compiler Suite,  the Customer also received a guaranteed stable price, even in cases where different elements in their Solution Stack are upgraded, or changed completely.

Micro Focus Visual COBOL was evaluated, but it was concluded that this would not avoid the problems inherent with continuing to use Micro Focus COBOL.  Ultimately, “no new license costs” was the most persuasive argument for making the decision to use COBOL-IT.

The Challenges

The cost-cutting initiative of the Global Provider of Financial Services overcame many challenges, namely:

Migrating from AIX on Power to RedHat on x86 processors.

Migrating Unikix running with Micro Focus to IBM TXSeries running with COBOL-IT.

Upgrading the Oracle RDBMS from Oracle 10 on AIX to Oracle 12 running on Linux.

Migrating from Syncsort to CitSORT.

Migrating Makefiles and JCL scripts from Micro Focus to COBOL-IT.

Continuous performance benchmarking to make sure that the new environment performed as well or better than the previous environment.

The highly collaborative relationship between Atos, IBM and COBOL-IT was critical in keeping the project moving forward and completing it successfully in less than 6 months.

“Our strong partnerships with the experienced Migration Teams of ATOS and IBM was critical in allowing this migration to be complete in such a short time frame.  We were very pleased with the results, as was the Customer, who met or exceeded all of their cost-saving goals.”

Stephane Croce, CEO of COBOL-IT
