To enhance the digital services provided to its clients, Atos now trains their software engineers in the use of high-quality software tools provided by COBOL-IT in their newly-created COBOL Academy.
COBOL continues to be the most widely used and mission-critical programming language in the World. With over 200 billion lines of code in production, and 5 billion new lines of code every year, COBOL programs are used to process over 70% of all business transactions world-wide. The growing dematerialization of the relationship between clients/citizens, and enterprises/administrations and the development of multi-channel « on-line » service offerings directly impacts the modernization of « Legacy » COBOL applications.
An industry leading provider of digital services, Atos manages every aspect of an Enterprise Application Modernization and as a result, the handling of the Company’s COBOL assets is absolutely essential. Rewriting the COBOL programs in an Enterprise Application is a very complex undertaking with high costs and high risks. As a result, for economic reasons, clients overwhelmingly choose to preserve their COBOL applications during their Application Modernization.
To meet the demands of their Customers, Atos has partnered with COBOL-IT in the creation of a « COBOL Academy » for young software engineers aimed at teaching them COBOL in the Sophia Antipolis Technology Park. “Now more than ever, COBOL is at the heart of the most mission-critical applications in large corporate enterprises, banks, insurance companies, and government agencies. At a time when these businesses are undergoing profound IT transformations, Atos helps by providing innovative solutions which allow them to preserve their legacy software applications. We have decided to create our own « COBOL Academy » with COBOL-IT which offers an enterprise-class COBOL compiler built on an Open Source code base and a wide range of associated technical services. With COBOL-IT, we are able to offer a robust turnkey COBOL solution, certified by Oracle and IBM, and proven in the very biggest migration projects undertaken by large global enterprises.” said Alain Civel, Technical Director of Atos Technology Services at Sophia Antipolis (06).
The Atos COBOL Academy provides training at 3 levels ( Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced COBOL using Databases ), presenting course materials, and supervising exercises using COBOL-IT software products over a 2 or 3 day period. Atos software engineers use the COBOL-IT Developer Studio.
“COBOL-IT Developer Studio is a fully customizable Eclipse-based Integrated Development Environment. The tool allows developers to maintain and enhance their COBOL applications using a wide range of integrated functions. The Developer Studio provides a Project Manager with interfaces for building and running the COBOL programs, as well as a COBOL Code Editor providing pre-defined code templates and automated coding aids. The Developer Studio also includes a feature-rich debugger that provides the ability to watch variables, set breakpoints, attach both COBOL and “C” debuggers to a running process, and step through code. There is also a Remote System Explorer module which allows the user to work with source code located on a remote machine, and compile, run and debug programs using the COBOL-IT compiler and runtime installed on the remote machine. But above all, the Developer Studio provides a user-friendly tool for coding, compiling and running COBOL programs and is available on Windows, Linux and UNIX platforms. As a result, it is a perfect fit for the strategy being fulfilled by the Atos COBOL Academy.”, explained Stephane Croce, CEO of COBOL-IT.
