Important Distinctions between the Standard and Enterprise Editions of the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite

The Standard Edition version of the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite can be downloaded from this website.

The Enterprise Edition version of the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite is COBOL-IT’s professional version. It is available to COBOL-IT clients with payment of an annual subscription, and can be downloaded only from www.cobol-it-online.com, the web portal reserved by COBOL-IT for its paying customers.

The COBOL-IT solution set is built around the Open Source COBOL Compiler and Runtime. With this Special Notice to Customers, we wish to emphasize that software downloaded from www.cobol-it.com is intended for evaluation purposes.

It is important for the customer to understand the distinction between this « Standard Edition » of the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite, and the « Enterprise Edition » of the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite, which is used in certification tests with third-party partners, supported in production, and also contains some very useful tools developed by our technical teams. To access the « Enterprise Edition » of the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite, and COBOL-IT’s Technical Support portal, contact your Sales Representative, and request a login to www.cobol-it-online.com.

The COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Standard Edition is the freely downloadable version of COBOL-IT’s Open Source Compiler. The Standard Edition contains core COBOL functionality, and should allow you to begin an evaluation process.

The Standard Edition is available for download to all members of the COBOL-IT development community. As a result, the software may be modified by one of the members of our development community at any time, either to modify a behavior, or to add new functionality.

COBOL-IT cannot, and does not take responsibility for modifications and enhancements made by the collective development community. Some development efforts in the Standard Edition may be in a state of perpetual evolution. For these reasons, the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Standard Edition is not used in certification tests with our third-party partners, nor is it supported by our technical support teams in either development or production environments. For help in using the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Standard Edition, COBOL-IT provides a public forum to which contributions are made by the COBOL-IT user community.

In summary, the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Standard Edition can be downloaded from www.cobol-it.com, and may be used and distributed freely under the GNU Public License (GPL). It is not, however, certified by third-party products for use with COBOL-IT, nor is it supported by COBOL-IT for use in development or in production environments.

Certifications, development support, and production support are provided in the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Enterprise Edition.

The COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Enterprise Edition is the professional version of the COBOL-IT COBOL compiler. It is provided to customers who have purchased a Subscription. COBOL-IT® Subscription Services provide access to the very latest certified versions of COBOL-IT’s software products as well as access to Technical Support personnel, and use of a Technical Support database for entering queries and reporting defects. With a COBOL-IT® Subscription Services, users also gain access to documentation, knowledge bases, and a number of other services. The COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Enterprise Edition is downloadable through the online portal www.cobol-it-online.com only.

The COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Enterprise Edition derives functionality from stabilized versions of the Standard Edition versions, carefully selected by our engineers. In addition, the Enterprise Edition version of the Compiler supports extensions to COBOL syntax and includes functions such as Checkpoint & Restore, the thread-safe version of the runtime, and a number of other options which are not in the Standard Edition version, and will only be available in the Enterprise Edition version.

The distribution of the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Enterprise Edition also includes a number of utilities developed by the COBOL-IT technical team to complement the basic functionalities of the compiler. For example, there is an external Sort function called CitSort®, which supports the functionalities of the widely used DfSort/MfSort utilities. There is also an optimizing utility called COBOL-IT® Lib Optimizer, which allows you to produce more highly optimized object code, such as may be required in certain production environments. The COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Enterprise Edition is developed exclusively by the COBOL-IT development team.

The COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Enterprise Edition undergoes a rigorous testing regime, and is tested and certified when new releases are forthcoming from our partners such as HP, IBM, Sun, Microsoft, Oracle, Syncsort, etc. The Enterprise Edition has been adapted for professional use in development as well as in production. Enterprise Edition releases are the only products supported by our Technical Support staff, who are accessible by our customers through our Subscription Service programs. In this manner, COBOL-IT seeks to achieve the highest level of quality and continued service for our customers.

In summary, the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite Enterprise Edition is the only supported version of our software, and is used in internal testing, and in certification testing with the latest releases of our third party partners, which include major vendors of operating systems, transactional monitors, data manipulation utilities, and databases. In addition to providing access to technical support through our software engineers, and these levels of certification, the Enterprise Edition also provides a number of very useful tools that have been developed by our technical teams, and which add value to the basic compiler offering.

The CitSQL® Family of Products, and COBOL-IT® XML Solutions

The CitSQL® family of products and COBOL-IT® XML Solutions have been developed by COBOL-IT to supplement the core functionalities provided by the COBOL-IT® Compiler Suite.

The CitSQL® family of products provide precompilers that enable users to use ESQL/COBOL in their COBOL programs, and interface with popular databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Microsoft SQL Server. The CitSQL® family of products includes the COBOL-IT® Precompiler for MySQL, the COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL, and the COBOL-IT® Precompiler for Microsoft SQL Server. COBOL-IT® XML Solutions is also available as a separate product, providing a quick and easy way to read and write XML data from within a COBOL program.

The CitSQL® family of products and XML Solutions are sold separately as licensed products. Functionally-limited versions of the product can be downloaded for purposes of evaluation on this web site.
