COBOL-IT announces COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL

The software company COBOL-IT provides to the market the COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL, the first COBOL native precompiler for the very popular Open Source database: PostgreSQL

Paris - November 26, 2009COBOL-IT, the first company to provide an enterprise-class Open Source COBOL Compiler, is announcing a new addition to its CitSQL® family of products: COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL. The COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL is unique in that it provides a native precompiler for the powerful enterprise-class Open Source database provided by PostgreSQL on Windows, Linux and Unix platforms.

With the COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL tool, customers can manage their corporate data in the powerful PostgreSQL database, using Embedded SQL (ESQL) statements in their COBOL-IT programs.

The COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL takes COBOL-IT programs containing ESQL statements as input, and produces as output COBOL-IT programs in which the ESQL statements have been translated into calls to functions that directly access PostgreSQL libraries. These COBOL programs can then be compiled by the COBOL-IT Compiler, with the result being object code that has access to the PostgreSQL database.

For large corporations, the requirements for security, scalability, and absolute dependability all accentuate the importance of strong database access solutions.” says Stephane Croce, CEO of COBOL-IT. “The COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL provides users with a very high competitive advantage, as users can combine the industry-leading Open Source solutions provided by COBOL-IT and PostgreSQL, and benefit from our shared commitment to quality support, high performance, reliability and cost savings.“

"With COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL, PostgreSQL Database Engine is now able to be easily connected to financially-critical applications enlarging again its versatility. PostgreSQL is bringing its scalability, reliability and performance to these applications with an extremely high ROI at no risk.” says Jean-Christophe Arnu, Secretary of PostgreSQLFr, the French Speaking User Group of PostgreSQL.

With the release of the COBOL-IT® Precompiler for PostgreSQL, COBOL-IT expands its solution set, underscoring its commitment to enterprises deploying applications written in the COBOL programming language. Providing a native precompiler for PostgreSQL will appeal to new customers seeking the lower total cost of ownership (TCO), and higher performance accessible in Open Systems, while providing existing COBOL-IT and PostgreSQL customers a compelling cost-reducing alternative.

About PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL is a powerful, Open Source object-relational database system. It has more than 15 years of active development and a proven architecture that has earned it a strong reputation for reliability, data integrity, and correctness. It runs on all major operating systems, including Linux, UNIX, and Windows. It is fully ACID compliant, has full support for foreign keys, joins, views, triggers, and stored procedures (in multiple languages). It includes most SQL:2008 data types. It has native programming interfaces for major programming languages and an exceptional documentation.
As enterprise class database, PostgreSQL boasts sophisticated features such as Multi-Version Concurrency Control (MVCC), point in time recovery, tablespaces, asynchronous replication, nested transactions (savepoints), online/hot backups, a sophisticated query planner/optimizer, and write ahead logging for fault tolerance. It supports international character sets, multibyte character encodings, Unicode, and it is locale-aware for sorting, case-sensitivity, and formatting. It is highly scalable both in the sheer quantity of data it can manage and in the number of concurrent users it can accommodate. There are active PostgreSQL systems in production environments that manage in excess of 4 terabytes of data.

PostgreSQL has won praise from its users and industry recognition.

PostgreSQL is released under BSD License terms allowing use and distribution without fees for both commercial and non commercial applications.
